The insurance company receives premiums for number of policies and pool these funds together. The insurance company then makes use of the pool of fund to invest and pay compensation should any insured make a claim under the policy. The insurance company will make a profit if the total sum of investment income and the premium exceeds the total claim paid and the operation costs.
